A Word From the Captain

Dear Member,

It is an honour to have been nominated as Captain of the Mayo Golf Society for 2019 by our outgoing Captain, John Manley. I now wish John all the very best for the coming year as our President and look forward to his continued support and advice as I take on the Captain’s role.

In turn, our Society’s Vice Captain for this year is Dr. Michael Geary; and I also look forward to working closely with him as he begins his work alongside the rest of the Committee.

One of the main objectives set out for the Mayo Golf Society is to ensure that… “Mayo people, who play golf, get involved in the social aspect of getting together four or five times every year in and around the Dublin area to enjoy the game of golf.”

This objective could not be achieved without the concerted effort of our Committee. Along with John and Michael, I wish to thank Padraic Melvin, Noel Mc. Loughlin, Willie Mc. Gee, Liam Niland and Jim Murphy; all long serving members of the Committee who are continually giving up their time to ensure Outings are arranged and that the Society continues to prosper.

This year has also seen Society members newly elected to the Committee; I welcome Gabriel Beirne and Philip Mongan into their roles and thank them for their valued input into the scheduling and organisation of the Outings for the coming year.

For the last number of years, Patsy O’Connor has ensured that the records of prize winners have been maintained and the Committee are very grateful to him for continuing this task.

Attendances at the Outings were strong in 2018 and I envisage that this will continue with new members joining our Society on a regular basis. I encourage you to inform other golfers of the existence of the Society, their participation would be warmly welcomed.

The prosperity of the Society is largely reliant on the generous support of our Sponsors for the year in relation to the scheduled Outings; I wish to thank Eamon and Fintan Brett, the Mayo Association Dublin, Michael Geary and Cathal Hughes, Louis Ruane, Noel Mc. Loughlin, Brian Carey of EBS, Cathal Jackson, and Fitzpatrick, Gallagher & Mc. Evoy Solicitors. The six Outings are to take place at Castlewarden G.C., Beechpark G.C., Powerscourt G.C., Westmanstown G.C., St. Margaret’s G.C. and Edmondstown G.C. Details of which are available in the Fixtures List above.

The top four players from Castlewarden and Beechpark respectively will then be entered into the open-draw for our Match Play Competition.

I look forward to seeing you at our Outings.

Yours in golf,

Colm Reilly,
