The Mayomens Golfing Society as it was then known was founded in 1958, by members of Muintir Mhaigh Eo, Atha Cliath.
Some of the founding members were Frank McCormack (RIP) Eamon Mongey,(RIP) Joe Malone and Frank Patton (RIP) who was also the first captain of the Society in 1959 The Society was formed to broaden the activities of Muintir Mhaigh Eo in Dublin and to get more young mayo men involved.
Mr Frank Patton donated a Silver Cup to the Society which is played for every year at one of the Society’s Golf outings (it has been kicked around a bit but still in good shape) after all those years. The Society has had many good sponsors over the years from instutions, like Bank of Ireland, Irish Permanent and others. Also many individuals, like Tom Brennan who also donated a Silver Cup to the Society called the ( Brennan and Mc Gowan Cup ). He was captain of the Society in 1974 and is now a member of the Society for over 40 years and is still playing good golf. Mr Liam Doyle of Roof Sealers Limited, who was captain in 1982, and was also President in 1994/5, is also a member for over 40 years and playing good golf. There have been many others to many to mention.
Other members with a long association of the Golfing Society are Paddy Robinson, who was Captain in 1979, John Griffin who was Captain in 1980, both members for over 45 years who have contributed enormously. Others who contributed a lot of time and energy to the Society over the years were Denis Coleran (RIP) was also Captain in 1981, and Tom McNicholas (RIP) who won an All Ireland senior football medal with Mayo in 1936, and was the Captain of the Golfing Society in 1990.
Over the years there has been some great characters in the Society Dr Tony Smith, (RIP), Ray O’Malley (RIP), Liam Malone (RIP), Joe McGreal (RIP) and Jim Shannon (RIP) but to mention just a few, they had all one thing in common a great love for their native county, and were all past captains of the Society. Over the years there has been many dedicated supporters of the society , at one time in the 1980’s there was 110 registered members on the books . never managed to get them all out playing together.
In later years the the Mayomens Golfing Society changed its name to the Mayo Golfing Society .
The aim of the current Committee and its members is to maintain continuity of this now long established Society and to retain a sporting and social get together of Mayo people in the greater Dublin area.
